Council welcomes grants towards reconstruction of storm-damaged boat ramps

3 October 2014

Bayside City Council Mayor, Cr Laurence Evans today welcomed the announcement of State Government funding towards the reconstruction of key boating infrastructure destroyed during recent damaging storms.

The funding was announced at events today by Minister for Ports, the Hon. David Hodgett and will support the reconstruction of two boat launching facilities at Half Moon Bay and North Road, Brighton.

Cr Evans thanked the Victorian Government for their support and said that the boat launching facilities are important community resources that attract users from Bayside and beyond.

“The boat launching facilities at Half Moon Bay and the North Road Jetty are an important part of Bayside’s foreshore infrastructure and a valuable community resource,” Cr Evans said.

“We are delighted that the State Government is joining Council in contributing towards the reconstruction efforts”.

“Their willingness to provide this support recognises the importance of these facilities to the broader Victorian boating community.”

The grants will provide $236,000 towards the reconstruction of the catwalk adjoining the boat ramp at Half Moon Bay and $369,600 towards the reconstruction of the catwalk adjoining the boat ramp at North Road Jetty.

The total project costs are estimated to be $373,000 and $622,000 respectively and Council will contribute the remaining funding.

Cr Evans said that due to the extent of the damage the boat ramps at both locations have been closed to ensure public safety but that the announcement of these grants provides surety that Council will be able to undertake reconstruction efforts in a timely fashion.

“Council is acutely aware of the inconvenience that the closure of these facilities is causing to mariners, particularly during the coming snapper season.” Cr. Evans said.

“However, with the aid of this grant Council can move forward confidently towards an expected reopening of this facility in May 2015”.

Members of the public are advised that the nearest alternative boat launching facilities are located at St Kilda and Mordialloc.
