Worlds Away: Art prize winner presents solo show

22 February 2016

The winner of the inaugural 2015 Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize, Kevin Chin, returns to the Gallery in a solo show of large-scale oil paintings that immerse us in a realm that is Worlds Away.

Kevin Chin’s work draws on migrant and travel experience to create colourful but impossible places that we might long to be.

Inspired by Magic Realist literature, through his works the world is re-envisioned from the perspective of the cultural ‘other’, to become a place where the everyday becomes fantastical.

Kevin Chin is the winner of the inaugural Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize 2015, and a recent recipient of Australia Council ArtStart and New Work Grants.

In 2014 Chin was awarded an Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant towards residencies at Youkobo ArtSpace, Tokyo, and Studio Kura, Fukuoka.

Recent solo exhibitions include Out of Ground, Art Stage Singapore 2014, and Stillness Between Us, Dianne Tanzer Gallery 2015.

Kevin Chin is represented by This is No Fantasy + Dianne Tanzer Gallery.

From the artist: Kevin Chin

“My work is about the search for home away from home.”

“Blending my experience as a migrant as well as a frequent traveller, I work to bring together the familiar objects with the foreign landscapes to create imagined worlds that explore what it is to be ‘other’”.

From the Curator: Julie Skate, The Gallery @ BACC

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to present a show by Kevin Chin, the inaugural winner of the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize. Chin’s vibrant and engaging large scale oils reflect the unique perspective of the migrant who is both at home and yet not in their adopted culture.”
