Council sets direction for buses to Hampton Station

Council has settled on an approach for bus movements through the Hampton Willis Street Precinct following periods of extensive community consultation and mediation which did not achieve consensus between key interest groups.
The move to change bus routes comes in response to Victrack’s plan to redevelop the Hampton train station.
Bayside Mayor Cr James Long BM JP said that without agreement being reached it is now up to Council to identify a solution that is in the best interest of the Bayside community.
“In spite of Council’s best efforts, including multiple rounds of community consultation and a facilitated mediation between the main parties, consensus has not been achieved between the stakeholders on a mutually acceptable solution for bus movements through the precinct,” Cr Long said.
“As a consequence, Council must now take a leadership role in setting a vision that is not only achievable for the site but is safe and works in the best interests of the broader Bayside community.”
Council has voted to support a position that would see bus routes directed down Koolkuna Lane in Hampton from their current access point to Hampton Station via Willis Lane.
“Council acknowledges that the outcome will be disappointing to a number of residents living immediately adjacent to the station, however the proposed design offers the best outcomes for traffic management and derives maximum benefits from the available land.”
Local residents had been advocating for a solution that would see buses driving to and from the Station via Willis Lane utilising a newly turning circle that would have to be built on Victrack owned land adjacent to the station.
Victrack have been clear that they will not support this option and, as a result, Council has returned to the previously recommended Koolkuna Lane option.
As part of its community consultation Council also tested an option raised by the community to locate the bus interchange on Hampton Street but this option was abandoned as it would require a review of a number of bus routes by Public Transport Victoria and is unlikely to be achieved within the next five years.
Having established a position in relation to the bus routes Council will now advocate to the State Government to incorporate this option as part of the Hampton Station redevelopment.
