New art prize to showcase contemporary art
28 November 2014
A total prize pool of $19,000 is up for grabs in the inaugural Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize.
Bayside Mayor, Cr Felicity Frederico said the biennial prize will showcase contemporary Australian art and attract high calibre entries to add to Bayside City Council’s Art and Heritage Collection.
“We are excited to be able to support creativity and artistic innovation through this significant new prize,” said Cr Frederico.
“Bayside has a special place in the art history and culture of Australia. Our landscape is the subject of some of Australia’s most iconic paintings and is famous for being the meeting place of the fathers of Australian Impressionism, Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Arthur Streeton.
“It’s important that we not only celebrate that tradition but continue it by encouraging and supporting the future giants of Australian art.
“This new initiative builds on the success of Council’s artist in residence program which is one of the most successful programs of its kind in supporting professional artists to achieve success.
“A local art prize worth $3000 will also be offered to encourage participation by amateur and emerging artists,” Cr Frederico said.
In its inaugural year the major prize of $15,000 will be for painting. In subsequent years the prize may be for works on paper, small sculpture or new media.
The prize will be judged by industry professionals Frances Lindsay AM, Dr Vincent Alessi, Curatorial Manager, Ian Potter Museum of Art and Julie Skate, Gallery Supervisor, The Gallery @ BACC.
Winners will be announced at an official award ceremony and exhibition opening of the finalists’ work on Thursday 7 May 2015 between 6 - 8pm at The Gallery @ BACC, corner of Wilson and Carpenter Streets Brighton, Victoria.
The $3000 local art prize is open to artworks or artists with a local connection to Bayside. Visitors to the exhibition can become involved by casting a vote in the $1,000 People's Choice Award.
