Council launches same sex and gender diverse social/support group
19 February 2015
The inaugural meeting of Bayside City Council’s Same Sex and Gender Diverse (SSAGD) social/support group for young people will be held next week.
The group will provide social interaction and support services to young people aged 14-24, who identify as same sex attracted, sex gender diverse or questioning their sexuality.
“Council is pleased to be able to offer this new service to young people across Bayside,” said Bayside City Council Mayor Cr. Felicity Frederico.
“The group provides a safe space for young people to come together and discuss issues relevant to them in a supportive and inclusive environment.”
“By increasing the confidence and personal growth of young people across Bayside, we encourage positive mental health across our community.”
Established in accordance with Council’s Youth Strategy and Action Plan, the SSAGD social/support group will meet on a fortnightly basis, with a Council youth worker in attendance at each session.
While the group will be driven by the interests of participants, it is envisaged that sessions will provide opportunities for personal development, recreational activities, health and wellbeing education, support services, special guest speakers and event planning for the LGTBIQ community.
Participants will also have the opportunity to choose the group’s official name, which will be revealed late March 2015.
