Sandringham Library has been announced as the winner of a competition in search of Australia’s favourite library.

The competition, run by the Australian Library and Information Association, allowed library users across the country to nominate and vote for their favourite Australian library.

Mayor Laurence Evans said the win was a testament to the forward thinking staff that have made the library a place where people want to be.

“I’m really proud of the Bayside library service. Our staff are passionate about the role that libraries play in fostering a love of reading in people of all ages.

“They provide a fantastic, friendly service and are constantly looking for ways to improve the service we provide.

“Our libraries have always been a step ahead in adopting new technologies and developments in library services.

“Every week hundreds of people take part in programs that have been developed to match the needs of the Bayside community.

The Sandringham Library first opened in June 1958.  A new library was built in May l985 in Waltham Street to make way for a new supermarket and now has almost 40,000 items in its collection.

Last year people visited the library 156,351 times and borrowed 205,904 items, an average of just over 13,000 visits and 17,000 loans per month.
