A New Community Garden Policy for Bayside
4 September 2013
Council has demonstrated its support for community gardens with a new Policy that outlines its approach to facilitating their establishment through an enabling process. The Policy also provides planning tools to assist community garden groups.
The Policy requires that community gardening groups identify and adhere to any relevant state and/or local laws regarding the planting of noxious and/or invasive plant species, and that they take legal and financial responsibility for the establishment and ongoing operation of their garden.
Mayor Stephen Hartney said Council acknowledges that community gardens provide significant benefits through social connectedness and recreational activity, as well as producing healthy organic food.
A copy of the Community Garden Policy is available on the Council website www.bayside.vic.gov.au. For additional information contact Bayside City Council by phone on 9599 4444.
