Smoke alarms are compulsory in all domestic buildings.
Smoke alarms should be installed on or near the ceiling:
- Between the bedrooms and other rooms within the house, and
- In every storey, preferably next to the stairs where a bedroom does not exist to that storey.
Smoke alarms only need to be battery operated unless they are for new building works, in which case the specification for hardwired smoke detector should be on the approved plans.
Smoke alarms must be manufactured and tested in accordance with the Australian Standard AS3786 (which should be referenced on the package).
