2016 Australia Day Citizen of the Year

Scouting isn’t just a hobby, but a way of life, for 2016 Bayside Citizen of the Year Russell Burton.

The Brighton resident and father of two was nominated for his leadership work at the 1st-14th Brighton Sea Scouts where he has been group leader since 2011. In that time the group has grown from 100 members to become the largest in Australia with 230 members.

In addition to his work with the Sea Scouts, Mr Burton is also a member of the Brighton Lifesaving Club working with nippers and helping with older members training sessions. He also supports charities including Kids in Dangerous Situations, Melbourne Legacy and the Victorian School for the Deaf.
