BEAUMARIS Bowling Club will save up to 950,000 litres of water each year when its new synthetic turf replaces its natural grass green after this year’s bowling season.
Bayside Mayor Councillor James Long said Council had secured a grant worth $60,000 from the Victorian Government’s Drought Relief for Community Sport and Recreation Program.
Bayside City Council has also contributed $50,000 toward the $200,000 project.
“The grants are a great outcome for the community and the club.
“The sustainable bowling green will allow all-season bowling, reduce the costs associated with maintaining the lawn greens and will save water. The new surface will also be fully accessible for people with disabilities.
“Beaumaris Bowls Club has the largest number of registered competition bowlers of all Bayside-based clubs.
“This project was an excellent example of community partnership,” Cr Long said.
Bayside City Council will work with the Beaumaris Bowling Club on laying the new green in autumn next year, after this year’s bowling season.
