Be a Bayside Water Saver

Melbourne has experienced eight years of dry conditions and below average rainfall, which has led to water restrictions. We all need to save water now to secure water supplies for the future.

The "Be a Bayside Water Saver" program is a community awareness program, designed to provide Bayside residents with information, simple tips and advice that will help them to save water, especially in the garden. Residents in the City of Bayside are being asked to save water because Bayside is the highest residential water-consuming municipality, per capita, in South East Water’s service area.

In June 2003, South East Water commissioned market research to test the attitudes and behaviours of Bayside residents in relation to water consumption. It was found that the primary reason for high water use was due to the large size of domestic blocks and gardens, which tend to use water thirsty plants (such as those used in cottage gardens).

For tips on how to save water you can visit the water efficiency page in the environment section of the Bayside City Council website, or visit www.southeastwater.com.au/bayside

What can you do to help?

Take the first step!
Embrace just one aspect of waterwise gardening to begin with – use more mulch, reduce grassed areas, choose water efficient plants or just remember to turn off your automatic watering system when it rains!

By now all residents should have received a copy of the Helpful Hints for Waterwise Gardeners brochure. It contains everything you need to know about saving water in the garden. If you would like a complimentary copy, please call South East Water on 131 851.

Talk to the experts
One of the best ways to learn more about water conservation is to ask the experts. So the next time you are at nursery or local hardware store, ask about waterwise alternatives. For general advice, you can speak to your local water retailer and your local council. And remember to talk with your neighbours – it’s a great way to raise awareness and get your community on board.

What if I am already saving water?
Spread the word! Tell your friends and neighbours about your water conservation efforts. South East Water would also like to hear about your ideas and achievements (call us on 131 851 to register).

The program is a South East Water initiative, developed in partnership with Bayside City Council. We are working together to help encourage residents to conserve water and ensure the sustainability of Melbourne’s water supply.
