Banksia Reserve resident information update – October 2008

Reconstruction works completed
Works on the Banksia Reserve sportsground reconstruction project were completed in June this year.

The turf cricket table has been centred, there is a more effective drainage network and a new irrigation system is in operation.  The new drought-tolerant grass surface is growing and the root system has begun to establish.

Works have made the surface more even with better grass coverage making the sportsground safer for everyone to use and to reduce wear and tear.  The new grass type will reduce potable water use by up to 50 per cent.

How long will the ground be closed?
Bayside City Council continues to monitor the establishment of the new grass.

Weeds have not been controlled whilst the new grass has been developing stronger root systems.
The ground will now be sprayed with herbicide to control the growth of weeks.
After the successful application of herbicide the weed growth will be reduced by mowing and raking.
A regular mowing and fertilising program will commence in November.
The wicket preparation along the top dress of the sportsground surface will commence during November 2008.

Once the root system is strong, the ground will be assessed with a view to re-opening in late spring 2008.  This is dependent on optimum growing conditions over the coming weeks, impeded in September by below average rain fall, and that there are no detrimental changes to existing exemptions under stage 3a water restrictions.

The temporary fencing will remain in place until the ground is re-opened.

Where has the cricket club been relocated?
The Beaumaris Cricket Club will commence the 2008/09 season with senior home games at Donald MacDonald and Beaumaris Reserves.  Training will be at Beaumaris Reserve.

Can I still use the park?
The parkland around the perimeter of the sportsground can still be used.  You may wish to consider using other nearby parks or reserves during the establishment period.  The nearest sportsground is located at Beaumaris Reserve, Beaumaris, approximately 700 metres west of Banksia Reserve.

The dog off leash area around the perimeter of the Banksia Reserve sportsground, excluding the playground area in front of the tennis clubrooms on Tramway Parade, continues to be available.  Other Beaumaris off-leash areas include the foreshore either side of the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, at different hours.  Dog walkers are reminded that their dogs need to be on a leash when not in the designated off-leash area.
