BAYSIDE City Council was awarded the Organics Recovery Contract Innovation Award (Most Innovative Organics Recovery Contract) for its pilot study on seaweed recycling.
The Award was presented by Compost Australia on Thursday 8 May 2008 for the Victorian Compost Leadership Awards.
Bayside Mayor Councillor Andrew McLorinan said Council was delighted to receive the Award.
“This is a fantastic achievement and Council is very proud. The project involved the removal of a sample of seaweed that was successfully processed with other green waste into compost for commercial landscaping.
“Council is now awaiting a report on how seaweed recycling stacks up financially and then we’ll decide whether we roll this out when we have to remove seaweed,” Cr McLorinan said.
Council was also a finalist in the Community Education Award (Leadership in Community Compost Education) for its composting workshops.
