BAYSIDE City Council is encouraging residents and businesses to compost during International Compost Awareness Week 2008 (4–10 May).
Environmental Advisory Group Member Councillor Michael Norris said more than 50 per cent of the waste found in Bayside’s domestic garbage bins was organic waste that could be composted.
“When organic material breaks down in landfills it releases greenhouse gas emissions that equate to over 3 per cent of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
“A large proportion of these emissions could be avoided if this material was composted using commercial or domestic composting methods rather than being sent to landfill, as these processes break down the material more efficiently, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
“Through composting at home or using Council’s green waste collection service you can reduce your impact on the environment by putting this valuable resource to good use,” Cr Norris said.
