GET moving! That’s the message to primary schools from Bayside City Council in support of next month’s National Walk Safely to School Day.
Council is urging Bayside schools to register now for the Pedestrian Council of Australia’s initiative on Friday May 15.
Bayside Mayor Councillor James Long said the event encouraged children to get out and about in their community while promoting exercise and healthy eating.
“It helps children learn road safety skills and helps reduce hazardous traffic congestion in and around schools, creating pedestrian safe areas for children entering or leaving school,” he said.
Cr Long said National Walk Safely to School Day – now in its tenth year - was a way parents, teachers, carers and students could help ease global warming and climate change, as they reduced car dependency.
Schools can register at www.walk.com.au and download a pack with promotional material, teachers’ notes and activities. The Pedestrian Council of Australia expects more than 8500 schools to participate.
The event is free and schools are also encouraged to host a healthy breakfast.
