Cancer information available at Bayside libraries - Tuesday 13 May 2008

CANCER information, developed by the Cancer Council Victoria, is now available at Bayside libraries.

The latest Cancer Council statistics show that more than 600 people are diagnosed with cancer in Bayside each year, with bowel, prostate, breast and melanoma cancers representing more than 50 per cent of these new cases.

Robyn Metcalfe from the Cancer Information and Support Service at the Cancer Council said credible information is a person’s greatest need when they are concerned about cancer.

“One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85,” Ms Metcalfe said.

“The Cancer Council offers evidence-based, reliable cancer information that can help reduce the impact of cancer on the Victorian community.

“We are delighted to be supported by the Bayside Library Service in our mission to lead the fight against cancer,” she said.

Ms Metcalfe urges all Bayside residents to visit their local library to access the free cancer information. “Cancer is a very complex disease so it is crucial that people have access to
up-to-date and relevant information.

“The information is available now and can help people make informed decisions about reducing risk, treatment or whether testing is appropriate for their situation.”

Topics include:

• Cut your cancer risk
• Breast awareness
• Prostate problems
• Being Sunsmart in Australia
• Finding bowel cancer early
• Cancer treatments
• Cancer Council support services.

Bayside libraries are located in Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham and Beaumaris.  For more information go to www.bayside.vic.gov.au/library or ring (03) 9591 5900.
