Bayside Greenhouse Action Plan

Energy efficient eves for your home To reduce greenhouse gas emissions Bayside City Council has completed the Milestone Five Action Plan of the Cities for Climate Protection Australia program.

The Action Plan outlines strategies  for Bayside City Council to achieve  its greenhouse gas reduction goal of 20 per cent  by the year 2010 in both Council operations and in the community.

For more information, view the Local Action Plan.

Council has reviewed  progress with implementing the Action Plan.

The review considered recent scientific research and community interest in climate change, government policy initiatives and measures for adapting to climate change.

Council achieved a 21 per cent cut in its operational greenhouse gas emissions and therefore is on target to achieve its target for a 20 per cent  reduction by 2010.

The community's emissions are growing, reflecting regional, national and global trends.

Achieving  the target for  a 20 per cent reduction in the community's greenhouse gas emissions by 2010 is a significant challenge. Council is continuing to improve its data collection and reporting for greenhouse gas emissions.

This is an on-going priority, particularly for community emissions.

Council  reduced its operational greenhouse gas emissions with several  green purchasing activities, particularly the purchase of accredited Green Power (electricity produced from renewable resources such as wind).

Implementing energy efficiency measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from public streetlighting and buildings are key priorities for Council to reduce its operational greenhouse gas emissions. Managing the risks associated with climate change will also be a key priority.

Council is implementing or supporting programs (e.g. Residential Energy Assessment Program, Solar Challenge, Ecocbuy, and Sustainable Business Program) to assist the community reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Government policy initiatives and programs will provide opportunities for Council to further assist the community reduce its greenhouse emissions and adapt to climate change.

It is generally recognised that a significant reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions is urgently required to reduce risks associated with climate change.

Council  has set a target to achieve zero net greenhouse emissions from its operations by 2020.

Council will continue with assisting  the community reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It will also develop measures for managing climate change risks. This will involve partnerships with the community and  governments.

The Greenhouse Action Plan Review 2008 Summary Paper provides information about the review and the updated action plan.
