One of the biggest challenges facing our community is securing water supplies for the future. The City of Bayside has the highest per capita residential water consumption in South East Water Service’s area. In addition, market research has found that the main reason for high water use is primarily due to the large size and type of gardens, the presence of water thirsty plants, and a perceived need to maintain the look and feel of the area.

Our challenge is to raise awareness of the need for water conservation in this municipality and to do this, South East Water and Bayside City Council launched the Be a Bayside Water Saver program in April 2004.

About the program

Our ‘Be a Bayside Water Saver’ program includes communications activities specifically designed for Bayside residents.  Phase One of the program was designed primarily to raise awareness of the importance of saving water.

The next phase of the of the program continued to reinforce and increase awareness of water conservation among Bayside residents by communicating waterwise tips and messages, especially focusing on the garden during the summer period. It also contained a number of projects that worked one on one with Bayside residents to reduce their water consumption.  Elements of phase two included:

  • A FREE water re-programming services for Bayside residents with automatic watering systems.
  • Advertorials in the Bayside Leader newspaper promoting waterwise messages and tips.
  • Waterwise competitions offering residents the chance to win $100 worth of Bunnings gift vouchers.
  • A series of 'how to save water' focus groups that explored the barriers to reducing water consumption.

Council continues to provide advice on ways to save water through its Be a Bayside Water Saver Program. For example, it sponsors the Family Life Open Garden Day each year and attends the day, holding a 'Be a Bayside Water' stand to provide information, advice and samples of water saving products.
