Federal policy

Federal policy shapes Australia's direction in global sustainability efforts. The following policies tackle a range of environmental issues and concerns:

  • National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development: Ranging from coastal zone management to public health, Australia's National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development reflects Federal Government direction and position on environmental sustainability.
  • The National Greenhouse Strategy: This is a strategic document designed to influence the approach of urban planning, land use and waste management, transport initiatives, and energy use.
  • The Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment (IGAE): The aim of this agreement is to improve the quality of water, soil, and biota resources through better understanding roles and responsibilities of Federal, State and Local Governments.
  • National Strategy for the Conservation of Australia's Biological Diversity: Including genetic, species and ecosystem diversity, this strategy sets strategic direction for a range of initiatives including planning and mapping for bioregions, ensuring fresh and marine water quality and sustaining fishery and forestry industries.
  • The National Weeds Strategy: This strategy focuses on how weeds and introduced flora species impact on indigenous and native flora and fauna. The document aims at creating better weed management between governments and communities in Australia.
  • The National Water Quality Management Strategy (NWQMS): This strategy sets guidelines for sustainable water management, including stormwater, groundwater and the range of issues associated with the water cycle. Being nationally focused, the guidelines aim to assist all levels of Government, catchment management bodies and communities alike.
  • Wetlands Policy of the Commonwealth of Australia: In response to Ramsar, the Commonwealth Government has developed a wetlands policy intended to ensure the obligations under Ramsar are met. This document sets strategies and policies for the sustainable management of Australia's wetlands.
  • Australia's Oceans Policy: The purpose of this strategy is to establish and set a framework for the integrated planning and management of Australia's oceans. Specific to this policy is the development of Regional Marine Plans.
  • Commonwealth Coastal Policy: Pertinent to integrated coastal zone management, the Commonwealth Coastal Policy outlines the Federal Governments position on coastal zone management, including objectives and principles.
