The Banksia Bulletin

The Banksia Bulletin is an environmentally focussed publication produced by Bayside City Council and circulated quarterly to all Friends of Bayside and beyond.

The Banksia Bulletin provides a forum to share information and raise public awareness and understanding of our natural environment.  Originally targeted only at Friends Group members in Sandringham, the audience has widened to include those residents in Bayside and beyond who have an interest in management of Bayside’s foreshore and bushland reserves.

The Banksia Bulletin relies on input from individual groups and personal observation from informed residents.  Articles are written by the target audience for the target audience.  While Bayside City Council facilitates the production of the Banksia Bulletin, editorial policy ensures that all views are shared in a balanced way.

Starting with a circulation of around 100 in the late 1980’s, the Banksia Bulletin is now the major organ of information exchange with over 750 committed residents.  Printed on recycled paper, the magazine is mailed free of charge to those on the Banksia Bulletin mailing list.  Alternatively, recent editions of the Banksia Bulletin are electronically available below.

The Banksia Bulletin was originally created as part of the City of Sandringham’s commitment to improving environmental awareness.  Its continued production is a direct result of Bayside City Council’s continued commitment to building the environmental capacity of our community.  Recognised externally for its contribution to the environment, the Banksia Bulletin won the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria - City Pride Media Award for three consecutive years in 2000, 2001 and 2002; was listed as one of three finalists in the prestigious national Banksia Environmental Awards in the Communications Category in 2000; and received a Special Commendation in the Victorian Landcare Awards Media Category in 2001.

The Editor of the Banksia Bulletin is Council's Environment Research Officer Amy Weir, in conjunction with Council's Communications Department and Councillor Terry O'Brien.  People are encouraged to submit articles to the Banksia Bulletin, however the Editorial Committee reserves the right to edit articles in accordance with space limitations or to omit them.  Artwork, illustrations and high quality colour photographs can also be submitted and may be featured in the publication.  All original material is returned to the sender, provided a return address is attached.
