Bayside City Council values its trees. The importance of trees and the contribution they provide to landscape architecture, community culture and above all, the environment is considered extremely important for the community today and into the future.
Bayside City Council has a number of regulations for the protection and maintenance of trees. The following regulations are in place:
Bayside's Tree Protection Local Law protects trees which are over a certain size criteria from being pruned or removed without permission from Bayside City Council.
The law operates throughout the whole municipality and protects all trees over the size criteria regardless of species or origin. For further information please see the Tree Local Law information page.
Please refer to Councils Management of Tree Protection on Private Property Policy for further information on the application of the Local Law.
The Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO3) in Bayside protects Native vegetation to Australia which is over a certain size criteria. The Vegetation Overlay only covers the areas of Black Rock, Beaumaris, Cheltenham (south of Park Road) and Sandringham (south of Edward Street). Native vegetation in this area is protected under the Planning and Environment Act 1987. For further information please see the Vegetation Overlay page.
Development sites which require planning permits are subject to assessment of significant vegetation that is present. All planning applications are assessed in terms of vegetation that can be retained with the new development.
If you have a tree or native vegetation on your property in Black Rock or Beaumaris and you are unsure if you require Council permission, contact 9599 4444.
