Special Evening Events

Opening Night

Thursday 16 June
7.00pm – 9.30pm
A red carpet event that will showcase the feature length documentary Touch the Sound (Toronto, Locarno and Edinburgh Film Festivals), which has been made available especially for the Bayside Film Festival. Thomas Riedelsheimer’s new film is not only a documentary about the pioneering deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie, but also a poetic investigation of human sensation and communication. Touch the Sound explores the fundamental connections between sound, rhythm, time and the body, and suggests that our sense of hearing can lead us towards a more attentive and meditative experience of the world.

The opening night will also feature the Australian Premiere of Aerosol, which will hit the Sydney Film Festival on the same night. This film halted work at the Weta Workshop in New Zealand (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) where it screened earlier this year upon invitation by Richard Taylor. The multiple Oscar® winner compared its visual look to the work of Jeunet and Gilliam.

Panel Discussion

Friday 17 June
7.30pm – 8.15pm
Lead by Paul Harris (3RRR and The Age, Artistic Director for the St Kilda Film Festival), Liz Burke (Executive Producer, OpenChannel Productions and award winning filmmaker The Needy and the Greedy), Karin Altman, (Project Manager, Australian Film Commission, writer, director and script editor), and Alkinos Tsilimidos, (director, Tom White & Silent Partner) will discuss the role and success of Australian short film. Are Australian short films more successful than our country's feature films?

The panel discussion will be followed by a program of Short Films. Both sessions are covered by the one ticket ($10). All short film details are in the Short Film Program section of this website.

Youth Documentary Awards

Saturday 18 June
7.00pm – 9.00pm
In November 2004 local secondary school media and drama teachers were approached by the Bayside City Council’s Cultural Development Department to see if they were interested in participating in the Youth Documentary Project. The aim of this project was to have professional filmmakers deliver a series of film development and production workshops to year 9, 10 & 11 students. The students would be required to work in teams of four, to develop a five minute documentary exploring a topic or issue of choice. The completed films will be screened throughout the 2005 Bayside Film Festival.

The Youth Documentary Awards will be hosted by Brian Nankervis and will see the most accomplished student filmmakers receive their awards. Bayside City Council would like to thank the following awards sponsors:
