When it rains, litter gets washed down our stormwater drains and enters Port Phillip Bay.
To collect the litter before it makes its way to the beaches, Bayside City Council has installed several types of litter traps.
Litter traps
Reducing litter is a high priority for Bayside City Council. The number of litter traps installed throughout the municipality is a reflection of Council's commitment to litter interception and reduction.
The Continuous Deflective Separation unit, or CDS unit is capable of collecting 12 tonnes of material. The CDS unit is able to capture and retain between 90 per cent to 100 per cent of all pollutants. The CDS unit recovers all water borne litter from large soft drink bottles to light coarse sediment.
Since the installation of the CDS unit, 11 additional traps have been installed along the Brighton Foreshore with the assistance of the Brighton Rotary Club.
Council has also installed over 250 litter baskets into the drainage side entry pits in most shopping centres. These traps collect litter entering the stormwater drains while still allowing adequate water to flow through the system.
Preventing litter
Council initatives to prevent litter include:
- Free cigarette butt ashtrays available from the Bayside City Council Corporate Centre in Sandringham.
- 'No Advertising Material' stickers available from the Bayside City Council Corporate Centre in Sandringham.
