Future Stories: Bayside Library Service Strategic Plan 2007-2011
The Bayside library service plays a vital, multifaceted role in the community, providing collections of books and AV material, information services, programs and events. It has an equally important job building social capital by providing space where people can engage and connect with other members of the community. The strategic plan investigates demographic changes, future needs of the community and analyses feedback from our customers to make recommendations for the future of the library service
Guidelines and Policies
Collection Development Guideline
The Collection Development Guideline defines the scope and range of the Library collection, outlines the selection and weeding criteria used to maintain the collection, and gathers together the philosophical statements which underpin the provision of a free Library Service to the community. The guideline is designed to be used by Library staff to manage the collection and by Library
patrons and Council staff to understand how the collection is formed and maintained.
The objectives of these guidelines are to:
- maintain a vibrant relevant library collection
- inform staff
- inform customers.
Accessing Library Resources Guideline
The Bayside Library Service is the community's resource for information and knowledge. In a democratic society that depends on the free flow of information, the library system is the key public institution and most visible symbol of democracy and the importance of education, lifelong learning, and intellectual freedom. The library is a pivotal information, education, and cultural resource for the people of the community.
The objectives of these guidelines are to:
- ensure free and open access to information and ideas while protecting the rights of adults and children
- guide staff in making decisions about the selection, management, and preservation of library materials including electronic resources and internet access, and in allocating library budgets
- inform the public of the principles that govern collection development at Bayside Library
- constitute a public declaration of the library's commitment to the principles of free access to ideas and information, and to providing collections that reflect a variety of viewpoints
- educate library users of safe and appropriate internet usage in the library.
