Youth Centres

Peterson Youth Centre

The centre is ideal for dropping in after school to relax and hang out with your friends.

We offer free:

  • Pool
  • Table tennis
  • Fuse ball
  • Turn table (DJ mixer)
  • Nintendo Wii and Xbox
  • Videos and DVDs
  • Computers and internet access
  • Art and crafts
  • Indoor and outdoor games
  • Drinks, snacks and cooking
  • Youth workers on site

The Peterson Youth Centre is a safe and supportive centre that is fully supervised by youth workers.

  • When: Each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
  • Where: Corner Highett Road and Peterson Street, Highett
  • Time: 2.30-5.30pm
  • Cost: Free

Courthouse Youth Centre

Bayside City Council manages and operates the Courthouse Youth Centre in Brighton.
  • Where: Courthouse Youth Centre, 75 Carpenter Street, Brighton 
  • Open: By appointment only.

Teenage Holiday Program

X-Treme Teen has a range of centre based activities for young people aged from 10-17 years old and excursions for young people aged 12-17 years old held each school holiday.

The program provides an opportunity for young people to try an activity that they might not have done before. Emphasis is placed on fun and having a go.

Activities and excursions vary from each program. Excursions have included:

  • skiing
  • horseriding
  • surfing
  • fishing
  • movies
  • caving
  • abseiling
  • and white water rafting.

There are also a range of activities based at the Youth Centres. Activities have included:

  • magic
  • skate
  • juggling workshops
  • cooking
  • african drumming
  • martial arts
  • tie dying
  • cartooning
  • and craft days.

Bookings for X-Treme Teen open two weeks prior to each school holiday period.

Art Splash

Bayside City Council operates a free art space to all young people aged between 10-25 years old.
Whether you like to draw, paint, sculpt, collage or mosaic, you can make this your own space to create art with freedom.
All art materials included.

Playtime buddies for mums and babes

Playtime Buddies is a Playgroup to support and strengthen families to make positive connections within both their family group and community. We aim to develop this group to provide information, support and befriending opportunities for families with babies and toddlers.
  • When: Tuesdays 
  • Where: Maternal Child Health Centre, Livingstone Street, Highett 
  • Time: 2-3.30pm 
  • Cost: Free 
  • Who: Parents with babies and toddlers 
  • Contact: 9599 4622 to make a booking (bookings are essential, as numbers are strictly limited for each session).

Popcorn Productions

Popcorn Productions is a youth committee responsible for designing and implementing art and cultural events in Bayside 
  • When: Tuesday afternoons during school terms 
  • Where: Peterson Youth Centre 
  • Time: 5:30-7pm
  • Cost: Free

Youth Advisory Group

Are you passionate about local youth issues?
Do you want to develop local initiatives for other young people?
Do you want to advise council about local youth issues?

The Youth Advisory Group meets monthly and is a great way to make a difference for other young people in Bayside.

Meeting details:

Where: Bayside City Council offices, 76 Royal Avenue Sandringham
Time: 5:30pm-7pm
Cost: free

Youth Advisory Group project
In 2010, the Youth Advisory Group members identified the need for young people to be better informed on how to assist their peers who may be experiencing difficulties in their lives and/or mental health concerns.

The Youth Advisory Group members have developed a poster - ‘How to help a friend’ which will be distributed to schools, community centres, libraries, sporting clubs and youth organisations in Bayside.

Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Youth Network (BGKYN)

The Bayside Glen Eira and Kingston Youth Network aims to

  • provide up to date information about the youth sector at agency, local, state and federal levels
  • provide opportunity for organisation representatives to share information about new initiatives and programs occurring in their organisation
  • provide networking opportunities for organisation representatives to create stronger working relationships

The BGKYN is open to community and government services or organisations that work with or assist young people and / or their families in the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira and Kingston.

Programs in schools

Lunchtime programs operate in schools to improve young people's connection to their school. For more information contact 9599 4622.

Be Yourself

Be Yourself is a peer education program designed to promote positive lifestyles. The program focuses on three important factors in a young person’s life: body, mind and social relationships. Be Yourself will be run in schools in partnership with the Student Welfare Coordinator. This program is targeted at year nine peer educators who will deliver their education session to year eight students. For more information, view the  Be Yourself brochure (PDF, 64KB)

Peer Leadership Training 

Peer Leadership Training is designed to support peer leaders within schools to learn skills to provide appropriate support to their peers.

Bottlewise

Bottlewise will support, educate, entertain and inform young people about the risks associated with alcohol misuse, peer pressure and decision making, whilst engaging them in activities that endeavour to build confidence, offer alternatives to alcohol use and promote skill development.

Little Fish Big Pond 

A grade six transition program aims to provide students with a better understanding of the transition between primary and secondary school. The program will be fun and interactive but will also provide practical strategies for students to use when entering secondary school and adolescence. 

Skills 4 Life 

Skills 4 Life aims to provide students with different ways and means to deal with life’s issues and all of the challenges that come with adolescence. The sessions will be fun and interactive but will also provide practical tips and strategies for students to use in everyday life.
