Bayside Nursery is closed for summer

Bayside Community Nursery will reopen for public sales from 6 April 2024.

We are knowledgeable and passionate about indigenous planting and grow and supply a wide range of beautiful Bayside indigenous species. The nursery:

  • is open to our community for public retail
  • provides plants for Bayside's parks, open spaces, inland and coastal bushland reserves
  • stocks the highest quality plants
  • provides great customer service
  • gives a memorable experience for all to enjoy.

The nursery seasons

Bayside Community Nursery is generally open to the public from mid-autumn until the beginning of spring.

Planting season

  • During these months we plant locally propagated specimens to give them the best chance of survival
  • We run gala days, events and education days that are open to the public.
  • We educate about what indigenous garden/nature strip planting means and how to create them
  • We advise of volunteering opportunities in local bushland reserves or at the nursery itself

Off season

  • The nursery is closed to the public
  • We are hard at work propagating, preparing, collecting and growing stock ready for the next year

As an indigenous nursery, the way in which seed is collected and plants are grown is quite unique. This can impact stock availability, timelines and dates.

Volunteering with the Friends of Bayside

Volunteer admiring the greenery

Bayside has a number of committed and hardworking volunteer groups that assist in maintaining our inland and coastal bushland reserves, community nursery, roadsides and other open space areas. They work closely with council and contractors to ensure that our urban environment is being cared for and improved in line with our Bayside 2050 Community Vision. This is achieved through working bees that are focused around; bushcare maintenance (weeding and planting), clean up days, as well as, propagation activities such as sowing seeds, striking cuttings and caring for developing stock. New volunteers are always welcome to join this rewarding program.

About the Community Nursery

The nursery opened in 1978 with the aim to benefit the community, as well as, protect and enhance Bayside's biodiversity. This is achieved by nurturing the growth of indigenous plants from local seed stock, through raising awareness and appreciation of Bayside's indigenous flora and fauna (in public, private and urban landscapes) and through encouraging volunteer engagement and activity.

Each year, we grow and supply around 100,000 indigenous plants, grasses and trees for planting in our parks, inland and coastal bushland reserves, as well as, selling quality stock to the community and local businesses (i.e. golf courses).

Supported by dedicated volunteers, the nursery is able to propagate and produce high-quality local indigenous plants that are otherwise unavailable or quite hard to source.
