Our open spaces for hire: foreshores, parks and gardens

If you would like to book any of our parks, gardens, reserves or beaches for a casual event, you may need an Open Space permit.

Open Space permits are subject to availability and require 10 working days to process. There are fees and charges associated with obtaining an Open Space permit. If you are unsure about any part of the application process, please contact our Recreation and Events Liaison Officer on (03) 9599 4687 or email recreation@bayside.vic.gov.au

An Open Space Permit is only required if one or more of the following conditions are met:

  • you are having a legal ceremony, e.g. a wedding
  • you are having a gathering of 50 people or greater
  • you are having a wedding reception or function
  • you want to erect any structure or infrastructure, e.g. marquee or jumping castle
  • if a third party is providing a service, e.g. catering, a food van, children's activities and petting zoos
  • you are holding any commercial activity, e.g. promotions.
  • you are running a sporting clinic

For more information, please refer to our terms and conditions.

Before making a booking, you should know:

  • No park amenities, structures or barbeques can be booked, and obtaining a permit for use of open space does not grant exclusive access to an area. The exception is the Sandringham Band Rotunda, which can be booked for weddings.
  • Sportsgrounds are not able to be booked on a causal basis.
  • Public space may not be locked or fenced off for the purpose of conducting a wedding ceremony or any private event.
  • With the exception of wedding ceremonies, permits will only be issued for use of open space up to 1 hour before sunset.
