Capturing details usually screened offers a broad perspective on Jonathan Walker’s (1952 – 2020) art practice through several periods of his work over the last 40 years. Walker lived and worked in the Bayside suburb of Hampton and spent the early part of his life in Gippsland before studying painting and printmaking at RMIT in the early 1970s. From 1990 to the late 2000s Walker taught painting at Western Metropolitan College of TAFE (later merging with Victoria University of Technology) and it was through teaching that he was introduced to a new generation of artists and exhibiting opportunities in Melbourne’s contemporary art scene.

Walker was renowned for his solo exhibitions at Pinacotheca Gallery in the 1980s, which resulted in his representation in the collections of Heide Museum of Modern Art and the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Working across the fields of abstraction and representation, Walker’s work is distinguished for its observational rigor that translates the subtleties, vibrations and inconspicuous details of everyday visual experiences into paintings.
