Algal bloom alert at Sandringham, Hampton beaches

A marine algal bloom has been detected at Sandringham Beach and Hampton Beach with additional reports for Elwood Beach and Dendy Beach in Brighton.

The algal bloom has been identified as Noctiluca.

Beach goers are advised to avoid contact with water if it appears discoloured in any way as the algae may cause skin irritation.
Algal blooms occur naturally and regularly, following warm weather and heavy rain.

The current bloom is relatively small, but others may appear in the area.

The situation is being monitored.
