Out Of Order - an exhibition of paintings by Shannon Smiley will open this Saturday at The Gallery at the Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre, Brighton.
The selection of paintings uncovers pockets of the Australian suburban environment and overlooked spaces to where the wilderness fights back against the suburban sprawl.
Smiley’s paintings shine the spotlight on a world where nature reigns supreme, despite humanity’s best efforts to keep it under control.
Smiley will also host an informal guided tour of his exhibition on 2 December from 2-3pm.
In 2014 Smiley spent a year painting from the coach house studio at Billilla Mansion, Halifax St, as part of the Bayside Artist Studio Program.
During this fruitful year, Smiley completed a number of works that will be on display for this exhibition including Untitled (Burnley) 2014 that later won the John Leslie Art Prize and was acquired by the Gippsland Art Gallery.
Another Backway, Heidelberg 2015 was shown at the Salon de Refuses and later acquired by the Ballarat Art Gallery.
Smiley’s popularity in Bayside was further evidenced in 2015 when he won the People’s Choice Award for the inaugural Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize.
Out of Order will be on display from 11 November to 17 December at the Gallery, cnr Wilson & Carpenter Streets, Brighton.
