Bayside celebrates Takeover Melbourne 2022 winner, Flynn from Brighton East

Flynn shares his story about taking a shot to stand up for his community

Congratulations to Flynn from Brighton East who is one of this year’s ABC Takeover Melbourne winners. Flynn shares his story about standing up for his community and advocating to Parliament for a new pedestrian crossing on a busy Brighton East intersection.

"I just want to let other kids know that they can take a shot too. When summer comes around, hundreds of people will be using that crosswalk. There's been loads of things that people have done for our community. I’m proud that when it was my turn, I stood up."

Takeover is about showcasing the voices of young Melburnians, like Flynn and helping them shape the future of their city.

The Takeover Melbourne winners will be showcased across the ABC, so keep an eye out for their stories on ABC Radio Melbourne and on the News stream via the ABC Listen app throughout November and December. They will also be celebrated at a gala event later in the year.

Congratulations, Flynn.

New crossing for Thomas Street and Union Street 🚦

After receiving Flynn's feedback about how difficult it was for people to cross the road, Bayside collaborated with Glen Eira City Council, who are both responsible for the management of the road, achieving an even better outcome than first anticipated.

The crossing features sensors which will extend the green light time for slower walking pedestrians, and a bike loop detector that will sense oncoming riders, scooters and wheelchair users and prompt the system to trigger the green signal before they reach the intersection. There is also a ‘beep’ for accessible path users that varies in volume depending on the surrounding noise level to reduce its impact on neighbouring properties at night.
