Be prepared for wet weather

Bayside residents and businesses should be prepared for potential flooding this weekend and throughout spring.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned of heavy rain later this week and into the weekend which could pose a flood risk. This includes suburbs in the particularly to the Elster Creek catchment which includes parts of Elwood, North Brighton, Gardenvale, Bentleigh and Elsternwick.

With recent heavy rainfall, many catchments are already full. It is expected they will rise further, staying extremely high into next week.

There are ways to make sure you’re prepared for flooding or storms. They include:

  • Monitor weather warnings and forecasts at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through the VicEmergency app, website and hotline 1800 226 226.
  • Have a plan for any power and internet outages.
  • Get to know your neighbours. Research shows connections with those who live around you helps us in all phases of an emergency.
  • Make sure you have enough emergency supplies such as food, water, hygiene, first aid and cooking supplies on hand to last for up to 72 hours.
  • Plan ahead with tips to stay safe on the VICSES website

And remember, during a storm or flood to:

  • Beware of dangerous trees and fallen powerlines.
  • If you must be on the roads, drive to conditions.
  • Check that loose items such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured before a storm hits.
  • Park your car undercover and away from trees.
  • Never drive on flooded roads. It can take just 15cm of water to float a small car - that’s the height of an average pen.

For assistance during an emergency please call:

  • 132 500 for assistance from the Victorian State Emergency Services (VICSES)
  • Triple Zero (000) for any life-threatening emergencies
  • 1800 226 226 for the VicEmergency hotline.

The BOM has predicted increased chances of above average spring and summer rainfall resulting from the La Nina, coinciding with a negative phase of the Indian Ocean over the coming months.

VICSES and emergency services have been preparing for these weather events. At Council we prepare by ensuring our drains and gross pollutant traps are cleaned regularly to accommodate high rain events. Check out our video.
