Brighton Library celebrates 25 years

Two librarians with the new Brighton Library plaque marking 25 years

Today marks 25 years since the new Brighton Library branch was officially opened, moving from Brighton Town Hall to its current location.

In 1978, Brighton Town Hall was refurbished and became the new home of Brighton Library. The general Library was housed downstairs along with the Homebound Library Service (which at the time was run by the Red Cross) and had their own entrance. The Children's Library was housed upstairs, currently home to the Brighton Historical Society.

In December 1994, Brighton Council, Sandringham Council, and part of Moorabbin Council merged to become Bayside City Council. Following building extensions and refurbishment works on the previous Brighton Council administration building, the new Brighton Library was officially opened on Sunday 15 February 1998 by Mayor Cr Graeme Disney OAM.

The wonderful space of Brighton Library combines Bayside's heritage with innovative contemporary library services enjoyed by the community today.

Happy birthday Brighton Library.
