Celebrating International Day of Disability

Monday, December 3, 2018

Today is International Day of Disability and the theme for 2018 is empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.

Bayside City Council is committed to supporting all residents to live an active and healthy lifestyle, regardless of their physical abilities.

Some of council’s recent new initiatives include introducing accessible beach matting at both Hampton and Half Moon Bay beaches. Check out this video of a local resident who recently discovered the new beach matting at Hampton.

Council has also purchased floating wheelchairs for both beaches and is currently fine-tuning the booking system so they can be ready to be used over summer. We also have a regional, all-abilities playground planned for Thomas Street Reserve – you can register on our website to get involved with this project.

Some of the other programs and services we provide to assist people living with disability, their families and carers include:

  • in-home support services, including personal care, meals and domestic assistance
  • respite care
  • support in transitioning eligible clients to the National Disability Insurance Scheme
  • an inclusive and accessible Youth Centre in Highett
  • inclusive school holiday programs.

We also work closely with disability agencies, organisations and schools in the area to support the wonderful community programs they provide for people living with disability, including:

  • MOIRA – who provide social recreation programs and sibling support at the Peterson Youth Centre in Highett
  • Bayley House – who currently have an art exhibition running at Bayside’s Corporate Centre
  • Sandybeach Centre - who run a gardening program at Bayside’s Corporate Centre.
