Clean up Australia Day 2023
Clean up Australia Day 2023 was a huge success! We collected more litter than ever before, with volunteers from all around Bayside coming together to make a difference.
The event was an amazing display of community spirit, with people of all ages and backgrounds taking part in the clean-up. A group from Haileybury Dickinson House, local Scouts, Brad Rowswell MP, and Councillor Fiona Stitfold all joined in, along with the dedicated regular 3191 Sandringham Beach Patrol volunteers. From picking up litter on beaches and parks to helping audit the litter, it was inspiring to see everyone come together for such a great cause.
Some of the most common items found on the day were plastic and glass bottles, cans, textiles, soft plastics, takeaway cups, lids, cigarette butts and straws. We also found a variety of unusual items, including two traffic cones, odd shoes, an L-plate, tennis balls, a pair of glasses, two books, a full packet of biscuits and a large toy T-Rex.
The litter was found within a 3km radius in and around Sandringham foreshore and Yacht Club area with much of the litter found in natural habitats that are home to an abundance of native wildlife.
The litter found on the day is an important reminder that we need to take action to reduce our littering habits and start taking responsibility for our environment. We can start by properly disposing of these items instead of throwing them away carelessly. We can also make sure that we recycle as much as possible so that these materials don't end up in landfills or oceans where they can cause harm to wildlife and nature. Let's all do our part in keeping our planet clean!
