Council disappointed at Beaumaris VCAT decision

Bayside City Council is disappointed that VCAT has overturned Council’s decision to refuse a high profile planning application on the beachfront in Beaumaris.  The planning application attracted significant interest from the local community both in support of and against the proposal.

Bayside Mayor Cr Laurence Evans OAM said Council made a unanimous decision to not support the planning application for the property based on community concerns.

“These included the build’s sizeable footprint, removal of vegetation, the overall building height and the design not responding to the amazing site and surrounds that are truly valued by the community,” Cr Evans said.

When making any Council planning decision, Councillors consider the recommendation from the planning officer while also taking community sentiment and objections into account.

The applicant applied to VCAT for a review of the council’s decision as they are within their rights to do under the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

While disappointed, Council is pleased to see that VCAT stipulated conditions that better integrate the property with its treasured surroundings.

VCAT has granted a permit for a two-storey dwelling with a roof deck and basement subject to conditions.
