Council supports children to become ‘Upstanders’

Upstanders

One hundred grade 5 students across five local primary schools met at Brighton Town Hall on Wednesday 26 October as Bayside City Council, in collaboration with local schools, launched the 2022/2023 Upstanders campaign.

Aimed at anti-bullying and being an ‘upstander’ not a ‘bystander’, these students were selected as future school leaders who will model what they learn to their school community.

This initiative is part of a three-phase roll out, encompassing the initial launch, art workshops and an exhibition of the resulting works.

Students gathered at Brighton Town Hall for phase one of the campaign, a series of workshops and activities aimed at increasing team building and communication. They spoke of their learning outcomes from the day with comments including “I learnt how to express emotions through artwork”, “how to be inclusive” and “how to be an upstander and teach others”.

They were introduced to former studio artist in residence, Adrian Spurr, who will be visiting each primary school and conducting printmaking workshops throughout November and December. The resulting works will come together in an installation at Bayside Gallery late January 2023.
