During excavation for a Cultural Heritage Management Plan study for the Dendy Street Beach Pavilion project at Brighton foreshore, a substance was encountered several metres below the surface.
A site fence was installed around the area.
Investigations were conducted which identified waste materials including material containing asbestos.
Council has engaged specialist environmental consultants to conduct further testing and advise on the management of the site which has been fenced, capped and mulched.
A specialist, qualified asbestos hygienist monitored the site during containment works and found no airborne asbestos.
The site will remain closed while further testing is conducted. The further testing will determine if any further excavation or soil removal is required.
Signage has been installed requesting members of the public stay outside the fenced area.
