New crossing for Thomas Street and Union Street
A new pedestrian crossing on a busy Brighton East intersection will assist pedestrians in getting to their destination safely.
A new pedestrian crossing on a busy Brighton East intersection will assist pedestrians in getting to their destination safely.
The crossing is the result of a collaboration between Bayside City Council and Glen Eira City Council, who are both responsible for the management of the road.
It was installed after both councils received feedback about how difficult it was for people to cross the road and for the safety of people travelling along Little Brighton Reserve and the Elster Creek Trail.
The crossing features sensors which will extend the green light time for slower walking pedestrians, a bike loop detector that will sense oncoming riders, scooters and wheelchair users and prompt the system to trigger the green signal before they reach the intersection and a ‘beep’ for accessible path users that varies in volume depending on the surrounding noise level to reduce its impact on neighbouring properties at night.
A signal loop detector has also been installed on Union Street and Keep Clear lines on Thomas Street to help drivers queuing along Union Street to access Thomas Street.
