A new home for netball in Bayside is one step closer with a Council decision to progress to the next stage of feasibility planning at the Wangara Road site.
The Wangara Road site was identified as the preferred location for a new home of netball in Bayside following a review of ten possible sites.
Bayside City Council Mayor, Cr Laurence Evans said a feasibility study had found the site could accommodate the number of courts required to meet the needs of netball in the future.
“Council is committed to meeting the needs of Bayside’s 2,500 netballers as well as future growth in the sport,” Cr Evans said.
“In 2017, in partnership with the Sandringham District Netball Association, Council completed a review to determine the facilities required to support netball in Bayside.
“The review identified that 12 outdoor and 2 indoor courts are required.
“We will now take our work to the next stage. This includes detailed design and costing as well as exploring and advocating for external funding to contribute to construction and ongoing maintenance.
The development of the 12 outdoor courts will be prioritised to be delivered by the end of 2020. The indoor court and 2 outdoor courts at the existing netball site at Thomas Street in Hampton will be retained until indoor courts are established at the new site.
Council has confirmed that 2 indoor and 12 outdoor netball courts are required with future expansion for an additional indoor and 3 outdoor courts.
The Sandringham Golf Driving Range is currently leased until 2024 and discussions with the current tenant in relation to its lease are continuing.
