New Mayor of Bayside

Friday, November 8, 2019

Councillor Clarke Martin is the new Mayor of the City of Bayside.

Cr Martin was elected by his fellow Councillors at the Annual Meeting of Council on 7 November 2019. Bayside Mayors are elected for a 12 month term.

At the same meeting, Cr Rob Grinter was re-elected as Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Planning and Amenity Committee.

A proud “grassroots” Councillor, Cr Martin is inspired by the community spirit of Bayside.

“I’m a passionate advocate for Bayside and dedicated to working with the community to protect and enhance the wonderful place we all love.

“As Mayor, I will ensure we continue to consult and listen to the community as we implement this Council’s record program of investment in infrastructure to enhance the lives of our residents.

“I will also be maintaining a strong focus on maintaining our healthy financial position to position Bayside for the future,” Cr Martin said.

Cr Martin said he was honoured to serve as Mayor and looked forward to continuing to work with his fellow Councillors and the community to make Bayside a better place.

Cr Martin was elected to Bayside City Council in November 2016 and represents Southern Ward.

Cr Martin has been actively involved in the local community since moving to Beaumaris in 2003 with his wife Megan and their three young children. He and his family have been active members of the local primary and secondary schools, and various sporting clubs including netball, football, lifesaving, cricket, gymnastics and basketball for the past 14 years.

Cr Martin is passionate about the benefits of bringing up children as part of a local community. Through his various committee roles and his role as a School Councillor, Cr Martin has been inspired to bring more people together to share a sense of belonging to neighbourhoods.

A Clearance Diver with the Royal Australian Navy for 10 years, Cr Martin subsequently worked in the offshore oil and gas commercial diving industry. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Health and Safety, and worked for 13 years at WorkSafe Victoria. Cr Martin has also completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Company Directors Course.

Cr Martin acknowledged the contribution of outgoing Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan in leading Council over the past year, in particular for his focus on delivering on community facilities while maintaining a strong financial position.
