Nominations now open for 2020 Australia Day Awards

Do you know someone who goes up and beyond for the Bayside community? Help to recognise their contribution by nominating them for a 2020 Australia Day Award.

Nominations are now open for the awards which recognise a personal contribution or outstanding community service by individuals and organisations.

The awards categories are:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Senior Citizen of the Year (new for 2020)
  • Community Event of the Year
  • Environmental Achievement – Individual
  • Environmental Achievement – Organisation.

The winners will be announced on Australia Day 2020. Applications close 6 December 2019.

2019 Australia Day Award winners

Last year the much coveted award winner of the 2019 Citizen of the Year was Joan McLean.

The award was presented to Mrs McLean in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Bayside over more than 65 years of volunteering in a variety of roles including as a "Pink Lady" at Sandringham Hospital.

The 2019 Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Ms Stella Wadeson for her advocacy on behalf of young people in Bayside and as a peer supporter for South Goulburn Island indigenous exchange students at St Leonard’s College.

Community Event of the Year Award went to the Bayside 100th Anniversary of Armistice Commemorative Service at Green Point, Brighton Beach.

The Individual Environmental Award was presented to Ms Elizabeth Walsh for championing the cause of Bayside’s wildlife and habitat for many decades.

Boomerang Bags Bayside took out the Organisational Environmental Award for raising awareness of plastics pollution and creating more than 4,000 recycled fabric bags as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic bags.
