Proud to promote diversity

We are proudly flying the rainbow flag at the Bayside Corporate Centre.
Mayor Cr Alex del Porto and Council Chief Executive Officer Mick Cummins proudly raised flag in support of our LGBTQIA+ community.

Council representatives will also walk in the Midsumma Pride march for the first time this year.

Cr del Porto said Council is committed to encouraging and supporting diversity and inclusion.

“Our Bayside 2050 Community Vision includes nurturing inclusiveness,” Cr del Porto said.

“The views of diverse community members are actively sought in Bayside’s decision making.

“Flying the rainbow flag and taking part in the Midsumma Pride march are visible symbols of our commitment to inclusive diversity and ensuring  members of the LGBTQIA + community feel seen and heard.”

Midsumma is Australia's premier queer arts and cultural organisation, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists, performers, communities and audiences.

The festival runs until Sunday 13 February, with a range of queer events involving local, interstate, and international artists.

Did you know?

In 1978, Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California, asked artist Gilbert Baker to create a Pride flag. Gilbert wanted to create "something that was positive, that celebrated our love."

"The rainbow came from earliest recorded history as a symbol of hope," Gilbert said.

There are now more than 20 variations of the flag representing different groups, genders, and identities
