Device advice
If you have a question about your iPad, tablet or eReader, bring it along to a device advice session where a volunteer will help you out. Sessions are held monthly in the Brighton and Sandringham libraries.
No booking necessary, just come along.

eDigital helpdesk
If you need a helping hand to access our library eResources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines, book a 30-minute session with one of our library tech support staff. They can assist with basic information to help download e-books and e-magazines on your iPad, tablet, e-reader or other device.

Book a computer
Computer bookings can be made over the phone or in person at any branch. Bookings can be made up to a week in advance for up to 2 hours. Members are limited to four hours total per day, across all branches. Visitors are provided a 7 day account on presentation of photo ID.
Wi-Fi access
Free wireless internet access (Wi-Fi) is available at all Bayside libraries during opening hours with no time limit. Users under the age of 18 with a Wi-Fi enabled device will be considered to have parental permission to access the internet. All customers must agree to the library conditions of use at login.
eLearning & Technology Training
Summer & Autumn 2020
The Library runs a number of training classes on a variety of topics relating to iPads, iPhones, Windows 10 computers and the Library's online resources.
Classes are held in the Brighton Library Training Room (14 Wilson Street, Brighton) and in the small hall at Beaumaris Library, 96 Reserve Road, Beaumaris.
All of our classes are conducted by experienced trainers, and most have maximum of 8 participants. A set of notes for you to take home is provided for all classes.
You can book and pay for a class by cash, EFTPOS or cheque at any of our branches. Alternatively you can book and pay online (using Visa or Mastercard) by visiting bayside.spydus.com/training.html, or by using the trybooking code for a class as detailed on the following events.

Bayside Techies 2020
Want to know more about technology? Join the Bayside Techies Team program.
The program consists of 10 presentation sessions throughout the year. This is what some of the participants said for the 2019 program “Many sincere thanks for arranging such a beautiful educational program”, “It is proving to be a terrific course and handouts of the presentations are such a help!”
You will need to commit to most of the presentations which will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of the month commencing in March and concluding in December.
Participants will need to be library members (you can join at time of booking). We will be showcasing the library eResources, emerging new technologies such as the 3D printer and craft cutter, and we will be having some interesting presentations including Choosing the Right Device, Family History & Photos, Picture Collages and much more.
You will receive a showbag of goodies including a $6.50 gift certificate to use at any Bayside event. Join us for a meet and greet and a cuppa on Wednesday 11 March at Brighton Library at 10.30am. iPads - Getting Started
Understanding Settings, Using the Camera & Accessing the App Store
This class will teach you the ‘basics’ – buttons on your iPad, icons on the home screens and different tapping/swiping techniques. Explore the Settings app, learn how to connect your iPad to a wi-fi network, find out how much storage space you’ve used, use the Camera to take photos, learn how to delete photos, and discover how to install some useful free apps from the App Store.
Please make sure your iPad is using the latest iOS (13.2.1) and is fully charged. You must also know your Apple ID (email address) & Apple password.

iPads - Next Step
Accessing the Internet, Sending Mail and Creating Contacts
This class will teach you how to use Safari to search the Internet (Google) for information, identify links, retrace your steps (go ‘back’), add useful pages to your Bookmarks and Home screen and revisit them. You will also learn how to write and send Mail messages, reply to and delete messages, save photos attached to a message and add/edit friends’ email address in your Contacts.
This course requires participants have a basic understanding of how to use your iPad. Please make sure your device is using the latest iOS (13.2.1) and is fully charged. You will also need to know your Apple password and have an email account already set up on your iPad before attending this class.

Understanding Settings, More about the Phone and Sending Text Messages
Come along to this class and learn how to organise your home screen, delete apps you no longer need, change & check some of your phone's more important Settings, add frequently called phone numbers to Favourites, use Siri, fix typing mistakes, save photos sent in a text message and more.

iCloud
Manage data stored on your iPhone or iPad and in iCloud
We will discuss the difference between storage on your device vs iCloud storage and the importance of iCloud Backup. You will then learn which iCloud settings work best for your needs and which can be safely turned off.

Photos
Learn new ways to use the Camera and Organise your Photos
Do you know how to use your iPhone’s or iPad’s camera to take simple photos, how to view & delete photos, but not much else? This class will show you how to sync photos between your iPhone and iPad (if you have both), how to use the camera to take and view burst and live photos, create albums of important events, some different ways to share photos including AirDrop and more.

Get to know Windows 10
Learn new knowledge & skills to become more competent & confident (using our new laptops). We will overview Windows 10, demonstrating & discussing changes in appearance and features (compared to earlier versions), Live Tiles, the Start menu, locating installed Apps (example OneNote), all tray icons including Microsoft Edge (Internet Explorer), File Explorer, the App Store, Notification & Action Centre. We’ll discuss the benefits of a Microsoft account & free cloud storage (OneDrive), and more.

You will be shown how to search for your ancestors in Australia and around the world using the free online database www.familysearch.org.

You will explore National Library of Australia (NLA) service Trove in this session. You will be shown how to effectively use this free resource to research various aspects of your family history using digitised Australian historic newspapers, print catalogues of libraries around Australia, sound and music files, pictures and photos, maps, archived Web sites and much more.

Trove - National Library of Australia bookings
Public Records Office Victoria (PROV)
You will explore the Public Records Office (PROV) in this session, the archive of the State Government of Victoria which holds records from 1830s to the present day. This genealogy resource includes records of immigration and shipping, criminal trials and prisons, premiers and governors, royal commissions, boards of inquiry, wills and probates, and stories of the key events and decisions that have shaped the history of the State of Victoria.
