The Bayside Built Environment Awards

The Built Environment Awards raise community awareness and understanding of the built environment recognising quality outcomes and promoting a better urban environment within Bayside.

To be eligible for an award all nominated properties must:

  • Be located within the boundaries of Bayside City Council municipality (including Beaumaris, Black Rock, Brighton, Brighton East, (part) Cheltenham, (part) Hampton, Hampton East, Highett, (part) and Sandringham)
  • Be completed, occupied or ready for occupation by close of nominations - 30 June 2024
  • Must have been completed after 1 January 2015 (at the discretion of the Judging Panel) 
  • Not have received an award or commendation in previous Bayside Built Environment Awards.

Design Categories are:

Best New Building: Recognises the best overall contribution to the local environment across a diverse range of design criteria including architectural excellence, reflection of community aspirations, positive integration into the local context, affordability, durability, creativity, environmental sensitivity and innovative use of technology.

Best Renovation / Extension to an Existing Building: Acknowledges the careful design required to successfully add new elements to existing building in a manner, which is complementary, respectful or challenging, yet enriches both the host building and the local urban setting.

Most Creative Design: Recognises buildings that exhibit distinctive design and landmark qualities, generated by new ideas and innovative use of form, materials, colours and technology.

Best Medium Density Housing: Recognises outstanding achievement in the provision of medium density housing that integrates harmoniously into its setting, achieves a high level of domestic amenity and contributes positively to the local urban character.

Best Heritage Renovation or Restoration: Celebrates the design that underpins the creative and respectful renovation, extension and creative adaptation of heritage places to extend their useful lives and enable new uses while retaining essential heritage integrity.

Best Environmentally Sustainable Design: Recognises outstanding responsiveness to the growing need for energy efficiency and the emerging environmental challenges of our time, setting a standard for others to follow, while remaining respectful of established neighbourhood character.

Best Commercial Building: Recognises commercial development that goes beyond accepted norms, to provide excellence in design that complements context, creates new forms, challenges preconceptions and responds to emerging economic, social and environmental trends.

Awards are made from on-street view except for Best Sustainable Building category. 

The Best Sustainable Building Award recognises outstanding response to the Climate Emergency and the growing need to demonstrate leadership through sustainable development, setting a standard for others to follow. 

Submissions will be assessed for their excellence in 9 key sustainable design categories: management, water, energy, stormwater, indoor environment quality, transport, waste, urban ecology and innovation.

If you have submitted a Sustainable Design Assessment (SDA) or Sustainable Management Plan (SMP), a reference to the relevant section is accepted for these categories. 
 
For example, thermal performance modelling at the early design stage, using smart monitoring systems to ensure the building operates as efficiently as the design intended, and providing a building user guide to occupants.
 
For example, through collection and reuse of stormwater, installation of efficient WELS rated fixtures and appliances, reducing evaporation on pools, and water efficient landscaping. 
 
For example, through passive design, installation of efficient heating, cooling, hot water systems and appliances, outdoor drying lines and all-electric development supported by installation of solar photovoltaic panels and battery storage.
 
For example, through installation of rainwater tanks, raingardens or swales, and enhanced site permeability.
 
For example, through optimal daylight access, solar gain, fresh air intake, cross ventilation, installing double glazing, reducing noise transfer and selection of low toxicity materials.
 
For example, provision of 'no lift' bicycle parks, infrastructure to facilitate charging of electric vehicles, electric bicycles and/or mobility scooters.
 
For example, through provision of facilities for waste separation and on site composting, and arrangements for collection of recyclables and organic food and garden waste.
 
For example, by retaining significant tree/s and installing landscaping that supports biodiversity, selecting light roof and paving colour to reduce urban heat, selection of sustainable materials and provision of productive gardens, green roofs, walls and facades.
