Short Story Competition


In 500 words or less, write a creative short story in the format of fiction, non-fiction or poetry using the theme ‘hope’ as inspiration.

The theme is open to interpretation – be as creative as you like! 

This competition is open to young people that live or go to school in Bayside.


  • Primary School Category (ages 10-12).
  • Junior Secondary School Category (ages 13 -15).
  • Senior Secondary School Category (ages 16-18).


A Dymocks book store voucher will be awarded to the winner of each age category.

  • Primary school prize: $25 voucher
  • Junior school prize: $50 voucher
  • Senior school prize: $75 voucher

Key dates

  • Entries open: Friday 1 May 2020
  • Entries close: Friday 22 May 2020
  • Winners announced: Monday 1 June 2020

Entry Requirements

  • Young people entering the competition must live or go to school in Bayside.
  • Submissions must be original pieces and engage the theme of hope.
  • Submissions must be completed as a Word document in Arial font size 11.
  • Submissions must be within 500 word limit.
  • Submissions past Friday 22 May 2020 will not be accepted.
