The spaces within: Garry Bish opens at The Gallery @ Bayside Arts & Cultural Centre

9 January 2015

From 14 January until 8 March 2015, The Gallery @ Bayside Arts & Cultural Centre presents The spaces within: Garry Bish, an exhibition by one of Australia’s pre-eminent ceramic artists.

Showcasing artwork from the year 2000 until the present, and drawing on his 30-year obsession with investigating space through the use of illusory imagery, The spaces within explores Bish’s unyielding fascination with pictorial depth dimension and its relationship to free-standing objects.

Referencing architecture and language in his ceramic forms, Bish uses decals and screen printing to create textured surfaces on his artworks, compelling the viewer to take a closer look.

The exhibition’s opening event will take place on Saturday 31 January, followed by an artist talk at The Gallery on Saturday 14 February. RSVP is essential for both events.

Bish’s talk will guide viewers through the exhibition and explain his approach to making, a process which includes experimentation with the juncture between internal and external elements of his contemporary vessels.

Born in Charlton in 1950, Bish was a school teacher before he began studying ceramics in the 1970s and established the Potters Arms Studio in Epsom, just outside of Bendigo, Victoria.

A ceramics educator for over 30 years, Bish has taught at La Trobe University, Melbourne, and currently teaches at RMIT’s Melbourne and Hong Kong campuses.
