Understanding body image

22 September 2014

Parents with children of any age are encouraged to attend a community education session on understanding body image.

Body image is how you feel about the way you look and how you think others see you.

The session will cover topics such as social media impacts, thinking positive thoughts and self-acceptance.

Mayor Laurence Evans said body image was of increasing concern for young people.

"Research tells us that negative body image can affect self-esteem, reduce participation in social activities and lead to serious health issues such as depression," Cr Evans said.

"The event will help you and your children stay informed on how to best manage body image issues and even prevent them from arising in the first place."

The event is on 8 October from 6 to 8pm at the Xavier College Kostka Hall in Brighton and costs $7 per family.

Children aged 10 and older are also invited to attend the session.
