What is website accessibility?

Website accessibility aims to make web content accessible to people with diverse abilities. All individuals should be able to navigate the web and access information they need, regardless of ability. Accessible design considers permanent disabilities like blindness or deafness, temporary disabilities like a broken arm, people who are neurodiverse, and also socio-economic and geographic restrictions on internet bandwidth and speed.

We strive to conform to WCAG 2.1 AA standards. This is an ongoing process and we are continually working to improve the reach of our accessible content and key accessibility features.

We use easy to read plain English where possible. We also use a consistent sans serif font with headings and sub-heading to improve readability.

File formats

We provide alternative formats for some files; however, other files such as archival documents and those from other agencies, cannot be made fully accessible.

A ‘skip to content’ link appears at the top of every page, in the header area. Selecting the ‘skip to content’ link will take you to the main content area.

Increasing and decreasing text size

To scale the font, use your browser resizing function. Our website successfully zooms out to 300%.


Alternative (alt) text is available for some images that contain information that isn’t in the content of the page. Image links on our news and events pages have the link as the alt text also.


Style sheets that format page content are designed using cascading style sheets (CSS).

Keyboard navigation

In most browsers, you can use the ‘Tab’ key to move between elements (such as text boxes or radio buttons). Where there are options, for example in a drop-down menu, you can use the arrow keys to select your desired option.

We have endeavoured to maximise the ability for users with vision impairments to use a screen reader with this website.


PDFs can be opened in a webpage or viewed via PDF viewer. These files will be readable with Adobe Reader’s in-built software. We now create HTML pages with the content rather than PDFs when possible.

Embedded content

Due to the constraints of our current website, we are unable to add iframe titles to our videos, Google maps, and other content that is embedded from a third-party website. All our embedded content have headings placed in the content above to explain the purpose.


We are currently working on adding transcripts to videos on our website that have been embedded in the last two years.

Bayside City Council is not responsible for how third-party applications or content is displayed via the website, such as, but not limited to, JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver or other screen reading software or devices.
