Access Gallery presents James Phoenix: Trans palette painting
18 March to 23 April 2017
James Phoenix investigated the strange visual logic that emerged as he explored two seemingly disparate modes of image-making.
The distinction between considered and detailed still life and quick, spontaneous abstract works blur as their relationship converges across the painting of palette in James Phoenix's body of work. Stacks of bones, sinuous jelly snakes and snow-laden trees existed alongside works with loose free-flowing brush marks to create a mysterious tableau and an ambiguous dialogue between representation and abstraction.

Access Gallery presents Nanou Dupuis: Level of awareness, conscious, preconscious, unconscious
11 January to 5 February 2017
Nanou Dupuis explored the act of contemporary abstract painting through the concept of preconsciousness as stated by Sigmund Freud: 'Preconscious are thoughts which are unconscious at the particular moment in question, but which are not repressed and therefore available for recall and capable of becoming conscious'.
Dupuis creates a painted environment that defies traditional perspective to expand the two-dimensional static aspect of painting and encourage the reading of the artworks by feeling rather than image recognition.
